Starting with Jack Ham in the summer of 1994 and finally ending with Loren Toews in June of 2017, this book is the story of the 23-year search to find the 22 players, and head coach Chuck Noll, who were members of all four of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl Championship teams in the 1970s, and honor their amazing accomplishments by having each of them sign a Pittsburgh Steelers football helmet.
This book also includes biographies of each of the players’ athletic careers in high school, college, and the NFL.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Merrill Shaffer is a lifelong (almost!) Pittsburgh Steelers fan, who grew up in Central Pennsylvania during the team’s glory years in the 1970s. Like many dreamers, his football career did not progress much past those youthful backyard games and schoolboy days. However, his one football claim to fame was kicking off the first ball under the brand-new lights during the first night game played at his high school football stadium.
Realizing that a career with the Steelers may not be in the cards, Merrill earned an A.A. in Business Management from Harrisburg Area Community College and a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Pennsylvania State University. He has spent the past 16 years in law enforcement as a probation officer and remains a diehard fan of the Black and Gold. He is a member of Steelers Nation Unite and has had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with numerous current and former Pittsburgh Steelers players and coaches over the past three decades. Merrill resides in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, with his wife and daughter.
