Zendaya has warned that the Euphoria season two may be “difficult to watch”.
Euphoria is finally making its long-awaited return, after filming on the new run was delayed by the pandemic.
It’s been more than two years since the season one finale aired, with two specials being released in the interim (both aired this time last year).
Ahead of the new season premiere, Zendaya, who plays Rue in the show, took to Twitter to remind fans about the serious nature of the themes covered in the series.
While the show focusses on a young cast, she wanted to “reiterate to everyone that Euphoria is for mature audiences.”
“This season, maybe even more so than the last, is deeply emotional and deals with subject matter that can be triggering and difficult to watch,” she said.
Zendaya added: “Please only watch it if you feel comfortable. Take care of yourself and know that either way you are still loved and I can still feel your support.”
In a recent interview with ET Online, Zendaya stated that the second season will be “tough” and “brutal” for the characters.
Euphoria first aired in 2019, and deals with topics of drug addiction, sexual assault and mental illness. It has been praised for being “one of the most groundbreaking LGBTQ shows”.
The series around Rue (Zendaya) and Jules (Hunter Schafer), who struggle with their on-off relationship alongside a host of personal issues, from substance abuse to family issues. Their relationship was left on a cliffhanger at the end of the first series, which remains unresolved following the two special episodes.
A recent trailer has suggested a potential love triangle, with Jules introducing Rue to newcomer Ellior (Dominic Fike) in a rather awkward scene.
Fike has already anticipated this love triangle will be controversial amongst fans, as he told Variety: “I can’t wait to see where people go with that and for all the hate messages I’ll get on my Instagram … and going into hiding. I can’t wait.”
The highly anticipated second season of Euphoria premiered Sunday (9 January) on HBO Max in the US, and will be available for UK viewing Monday (10 January) on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
