The trailer for Scream is finally here and with it comes the first tease of an actual plot: this time around, Ghostface is killing people related to the legacy characters.

As we know by now, the fifth Scream is fully canonized with Neve Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott, David ArquetteCourteney Cox as Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers, and even Marley Shelton‘s Scream 4 character Deputy Judy Hicks is back.

The trailer gives us our first look at the survivors in action, being summoned back to Woodsboro by Ghostface and whoever is hiding under the mask, as well as the new cast of characters that get carved the hell up. For fans of Wes Craven’s Scream, this looks more than authentic and like it will be a bloody good time.

Here’s the just-released official synopsis:

“Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”

Scream is this time directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett and produced by Chad Villella of the filmmaking group Radio Silence (Ready or Not, V/H/S, Southbound) from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock).

The new ensemble includes Jack Quaid (“The Boys”), Melissa Barrera (“In The Heights”) and Jenna Ortega (“You”), with Dylan Minnette (Goosebumps), Mason Gooding (Let It Snow), Kyle Gallner (Ghosts of War), Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Love”) and Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

Scream returns to theaters on January 14, 2022.
