There are quite a few staple features of the Animal Crossing series missing from New Horizons, including several returning characters and structures such as Brewster’s Roost. Another example of a missing area is the Observatory, but there’s a possibility that future updates could bring it back. If so, what could change in New Horizons compared to the Observatory’s role in previous Animal Crossing games?
In older Animal Crossing titles, the Observatory primarily exists so that players can customize the constellations above their town. These are viewable by other players when they come to visit. There’s a possibility that the feature was removed ahead of New Horizons‘ release because Nintendo was worried about inappropriate content. In such a case, it seems probable that the Observatory – or at least the constellation feature – would need to be reworked before it’s added.
Another problem that might arise is the fact that Celeste already has a new job in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. During meteor showers, she wanders the town in order to give players zodiac-themed DIY recipes. If she were to move into the Observatory full-time again, it would mean that either Celeste would no longer be able to roam freely about the island or the Observatory would need to be closed during meteor shower nights.
How Celeste Could Run The Observatory In New Horizons
There are a few things that can be done to prevent either of those options, though. A new character could take Celeste’s place on meteor shower nights or even permanently within the Observatory, similar to how the Nooklings run Tom Nook’s shop so that he can instead reside at Resident Services. Blathers, Celeste’s brother, could also help run the Observatory given he already resides in the Museum. If New Horizons followed the formula introduced in other Animal Crossing games, it’s probable that the Observatory would be located on the Museum’s third floor again. Brewster’s Roost café could also be placed on that floor to help fill out the building.
The Observatory could also get its own building in New Horizons, as well, though. A leak that was uncovered in May revealed that island expansion may be coming to the Animal Crossing series in the near future, and if so there would be plenty of room to build an independent building to house the Observatory. It could also reside on one of the stone outcroppings on the corner of each island. Giving players the freedom to choose where the Observatory is located, however, would add an additional level of freedom to Animal Crossing: New Horizons and would likewise encourage players to collect more space-themed DIY recipes in order to accessorize the area.
