Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ First Meeting Gets A Sinister Twist

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #71

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Amazing Spider-Man, a new and dark twist has just been added to Peter Parker’s first meeting with Miles Morales, and it’s all thanks to the sinister actions of Mysterio. In this issue, Quentin Beck reveals to Mary Jane Watson the secret history of his death and resurrection in the Marvel Universe, as well as the involvement of the demonic version of Harry Osborn known as Kindred who’s been haunting and tormenting Spider-Man for the better part of four years.

Currently, Spider-Man is right in the middle of the brand new Sinister War, which sees two major teams of villains going head to head while also wanting to see Peter Parker dead. However, Mary Jane Watson has also been kidnapped by the Sinister Six’s Mysterio, whom MJ had thought was seeking redemption as a reformed foe. Unfortunately, it seems as though Mysterio is caught in a vicious cycle he can’t break due to being indebted to Kindred, the conductor of the entire conflict who desires to have Spider-Man brought to his knees and tested to his very limits as a superhero.

Now, Amazing Spider-Man #71 from writer Nick Spencer with artists Federico Vicentini and Federico Sabbatini sees Mysterio revealing what happened after he fought Daredevil and subsequently shot himself in the head. Being tortured in the depths of Hell, Quentin Beck was approached by Kindred, who restored and brought him back to life in exchange for his services. Mysterio then revealed that it was Kindred who provided him with the means to travel between dimensions, leading to Spider-Man’s adventure in the Ultimate Universe where Peter Parker met Miles Morales for the first time in the 2012 Spider-Men crossover event from Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. However, that miniseries has a dark undertone now that it’s known that Kindred had a hand in making it happen.

Did Kindred intend for Peter Parker to visit the Ultimate Universe? Did he want Miles and Peter to meet? How much was Kindred’s plan as opposed to Mysterio’s general failure? Clearly, there are quite a few questions but it’s certainly an intriguing dynamic added to Peter and Miles’ first meeting nonetheless. In any case, it seems as though Mysterio has been Kindred’s pawn for a really long time, despite having stretches of time where the demon seemingly didn’t need him for anything, lulling him into a false hope that his debts had been paid, only for Kindred to show up for his next request.

Regardless, it seems as though Mysterio‘s hopes of leaving his old life behind are gone and unattainable so long as he remains indebted to the demon version of Harry Osborn. Heres’s hoping Spider-Man can finally take down Kindred once and for all as Sinister War continues. Perhaps he’ll get an assist from Miles Morales and his fellow Spider-Allies? This certainly seems like the perfect war to call in some major backup all things considered.
