Eclecticism is the key to success in modern pop, and GiGi Vega has found a way to incorporate it in her sound without abandoning the core aesthetics of her genre at its simplest in the new single “Down Crazy.” It all begins with the beat in this song, atop which Vega drops as much melodic charisma as we can handle within the space of a two-and-a-half-minute pop track. Her personality is the narrative in this single as opposed to her storytelling, and although I think the groove makes this a dance track above all else, it isn’t lacking in emotional substance – far from it, in my opinion. This player is starting to become a favorite of mine, and one look at this release will explain why.

The futuristic feel of the rhythm is effortlessly fostered through the use of the synth melodies, and Vega plays off of the vibe the tempo and the sonic neon create in this single. She doesn’t have to be particularly outrageous with her linguistics to plead a passionate case to us in these lyrics; she’s able to stick with something barebones and put all of her focus on the strength of these harmonies, which is considerable, to say the least. Her voice is her greatest attribute, and this is the kind of song that was designed to showcase that from the ground up.
This bassline has moments in which it spills into corners of the mix beyond the bottom-end, but I think this too conveys something as important as any of the words do. Vega is put at odds with its slinking in the background, and while I don’t believe she needed to go toe to toe with this element of the song to prove her agile abilities in the studio, there’s definitely no getting around her edge now that this song is hitting record store shelves. She’s fearless and down to roll with the heaviest of grooves in “Down Crazy,” and from this perspective, I think the single lives up to its title both ironically and quite literally speaking.
When she takes clandestine harmonies with slick beats, GiGi Vega comes out of the recording studio with something that almost any pop fan could fall in love with this summer, and this is what we’re getting in the new single “Down Crazy.” Vega has had my heart since first coming into the conversation earlier this year. She doesn’t need a major springboard in her songwriting; she begins simply and builds something organic with her words and music the same, and her approach to the pop genre has made me consider covering it and the underground producing its best sounds in 2021 a little more closely.
