Happy Death Day Director’s New Netflix Movie Starts Filming

Movies

Happy Death Day writer/director Christopher Landon reveals he has officially begun production on his next movie, Netflix’s We Have a Ghost. The film was first announced to be in the works in late 2017 when Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to the project after a heated bidding war against 20th Century Fox, Amblin, Studio 8 and Sony Pictures. Development has been quietly underway on the project for years since while Landon focused on his films at Blumhouse.

Originally titled Ernest and based on Geoff Manaugh’s short story published in Vice, the plot centers on a man who buys a house and finds a mostly-harmless ghostly inhabitant. Realizing the spirit bears a striking resemblance to late acting legend Ernest Borgnine, the homeowner begins filming the ghost’s antics around his house, turning Ernest into a viral internet sensation. However, he finds his plans upended when a high school senior he enlists to help with his plans goes missing along with Ernest.

Landon took to Twitter to share the news that he has officially begun production on the film. The writer/director’s post also revealed the title to be We Have a Ghost and that it is set at Netflix. Check out his exciting teaser post below:

It should be noted that neither Netflix nor Landon hasn’t outright confirmed the film to be Ernest, but if to scroll through the comments of his post one can find a brief interaction between the writer/director and Manaugh expressing their excitement of filming finally getting underway on the project. Additionally, with the only other project on his docket being Paranormal Activity 7, which is being directed by Underwater‘s William Eubank and written by Landon, it certainly seems clear the new film to be his Ernest adaptation. Though the shift to Netflix seemingly points to Legendary no longer being attached to the project, the studio and streaming platform have paired on other projects in the past, including Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola Holmes and its in-development sequel.

One of the most exciting things about Landon’s We Have a Ghost announcement aside from its existence is having Marc Spicer as the director of photography. While the name may not spark any immediate recognition, his past efforts as both a DP and general camera operator in the horror genre, namely Lights Out and both Escape Room films, should certainly create a sense of anticipation for genre fans. With any luck, Landon will keep rolling out teases for the film as production continues.
