There’s a new batch of yachties setting sail under Captain Sandy Yawn. And Below Deck Mediterranean viewers know that Sandy can be polarizing, especially to her interior staff. Though with Hannah Ferrier gone, there’s a lot less tension on board already. New Chief Stew Katie Flood is quite capable in her job, and has earned the respect of her captain. So far so good onboard.
Of course there are no issues between Sandy and her protege Malia White. They worked together last season and know what to expect from each other. Malia and Sandy have always spoken highly of each other and the bosun is certainly indebted to the captain for guiding her in the industry. Maybe it’s Malia’s good opinion of her boss that trickled down to her team. And if the team head is doing well, there won’t be negative interaction between deck crew and Sandy. A halo effect.
So, from what we’ve seen so far, it’s hardly a surprise that deck hand David Pascoe had good things to say about Captain Sandy when he appeared on Watch What Happens Live last week. Even less of a surprise now that it’s clear he’s crushing on Malia.
The clip was shared on the official WWHL Twitter page. When asked, “how does Captain Sandy compare to all the other captains you have previously worked with in the past?” David replied, “she’s brilliant. Like, I couldn’t say any more or any less. And I’ve always worked with good captains.”
Now David grew up in the UK. Saying “brilliant” is comparable to an American using the word “awesome.” So David is not only complementing Sandy’s intelligence, but also generally expressing a positive reaction towards her.

It’s interesting how the cast members have to interact, or speak about each other, before the season finale has aired. They can’t give anything away. But David’s answer seemed genuine. So it seems Sandy will not be getting into major issues with the deck team, except when Malia failed to report an injury.
If nothing is going on above deck, Sandy will find a reason to stalk around the galley. That’s where the real Sandy shines. After a disastrous first day on charter, chef Mathew Shea is back on a quest for redemption. He’s cooking up a storm, and wowing the guests. Hopefully he continues to keep the guests, and Sandy, happy with the food.
