X-Men’s Greatest Enemy Is Returning In The Onslaught Revelation

Movies

One of the X-Men’s greatest foes is set to return in the one-shot X-Men: The Onslaught Revelation 1, written by Si Spurrier with art by Bob Quinn. The special, spinning out of Spurrier’s work on Way of X, will be on sale in print and digital this September.

Onslaught was born from the mixing of the consciousnesses of Magneto and Professor Xavier. After Magneto ripped the adamantium from Wolverine’s skeleton, an enraged Xavier effectively lobotomized Magneto, but during the moment of contact, their minds mingled, and the dark impulses of both came together to form Onslaught. Onslaught then launched a brutal attack against the X-Men and Earth’s other heroes, which ended with the Avengers and the Fantastic Four shunted off to the Heroes Reborn reality and the world at large believing them dead. Onslaught, now existing as a separate being of pure psychic energy, has been haunting the fringes – and dreams – of Krakoan society. Now, in recent issues of Way of X, Nightcrawler and Legion have become aware of his return. Onslaught, who has seemingly returned thanks to the mysterious Project Orchis and is ready to make his move.

An advanced solicitation for the issue acknowledges the developments happening in Way of X, asserting that mutantkind has strayed from the Way, and “the Onslaught is upon you.” The apocalyptic imagery continues, calling Onslaught a “primal evil” and that he was preying on the minds of mutants. A party is involved too – the mysterious Cruci-Ball – a “party to end everything.” It has fallen on Nightcrawler to sound the alarm and warn the rest of mutantkind… if it’s not too late. Writer Si Spurrier has been laying the foundation for Onslaught’s return in Way of X. There he has been a nightmarish figure haunting the dreams of Krakoa’s citizens and leading them down a dark path. He terrorizes their dreams as the “Patchwork Man,” a reference to his origin as an amalgamation of Professor X and Magneto. The apocalyptic language and imagery the solicitation invokes show just how grave the threat of Onslaught is. It could potentially be the end of Krakoa and the end of everything the X-Men, and mutants as a whole, have worked to build. What is truly terrifying is that Project Orchis, a group of humans, are somehow behind Onslaught’s return. They resurrected him out of fear of Krakoa and mutant expansion, and this could prove devastating to the fledgling nation. Krakoa has weathered much already, but can it survive Onslaught?

Onslaught is one of the X-Men’s greatest foes, and now he is returning to bring destruction down on their island paradise. The 40-page one-shot X-Men: The Onslaught Revelation arrives this September with a cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli and a variant by Federico Vicentini.
