Captain Sandy Yawn Says Mathew Shea Is The Laziest And Has The Biggest Problem With Authority On Below Deck

Reality TV

What is it about Captain Sandy Yawn and Below Deck Mediterranean chefs?  Or chief stews for that matter.  Though, Sandy seems much happier with Katie Flood taking over for Hannah Ferrier this season.  But as for drama in the galley, well it’s either that Bravo sends one incompetent chef after another or Sandy is the common denominator.

Sandy drove Kiko Lorran, a perfectly respectable chef, to tears and hovered over an already high-strung Tom Checketts.  She berated Ben Robinson when dinner was served cold without dealing with the real issue; a faulty stove.  Now, there’s Mathew Shea, who ran himself ragged with anxiety and an inflamed knee.  He ducked out of his duties on the first day of charter one.  Not a bright start, but perhaps Mathew deserves the benefit of the doubt.  Katie had good things to say about him by the end of the season.  Sandy, on the other hand, did not.  But what’s the truth?  Is Mathew as bad as Sandy says or is her hyperbole sullying the name of another good chef?

Sandy and Katie appeared on Watch What Happens Live recently to dish on the new cast.  And the consistent negative answer in a quick game of, “who’s the most likely? was none other than Chef Mathew.

Andy started by asking, “who parties the hardest?”  Katie picked deck hand  Mzi “Zee” Dempers.  David Pascoe was named as the most tangled in boat drama, also by Katie.  “I was present kinda.  I’m gonna say David,” she said.

Here’s a first.  Captain Sandy raved about Katie and named her as the crew member that the guests favored.  When has Sandy ever spoken well of her chief stew?  Things are looking towards a happy trio of Katie, Sandy, and Bosun Malia White as department heads.

Now the shade starts getting thrown.  Mathew becomes the answer to all the negative questions.  Andy asked Sandy which of the crew was the laziest.  She replied, “the chef.”  Again, when asked, “who had the biggest problem with authority,” Sandy named chef.  She won’t say his name for some inexplicable reason, but she ought to.  At least to keep all of the unsatisfactory chefs in order in her mind.

Mathew was also the biggest kiss-ass within the group towards Captain Sandy, according to Katie.  That may not necessarily be a bad thing.  He may just have been trying to redeem himself after a disastrous first dinner that he wasn’t able to prepare.

The season premiere is delivering on the drama, and it’s only going to get better.  Katie couldn’t even pinpoint one person when Andy asked who brought the most drama to the yacht.  She only responded, “people can make that decision for themselves.”  Maybe Sandy would have had a different answer, but she always seeks out attention in the galley so why wouldn’t she call out chef?
