desmond the songwriter’s new album, “Happiness Is Priceless,” debuted on the Nielsen SoundScan Reggae Chart and the South Florida Reggae Chart. Pop Magazine placed desmond’s album at number 44 on their list of top 50 albums of 2020, and it was ranked ahead of Taylor Swift’s. This same list includes artists like Alicia Keys, John Legend, and Gregory Porter. This is his first album and he’s already catching attention. Pop Magazine also nominated him for an Emerging Artist 2021 award. Before his music career, desmond played lead roles in Jamaica’s LTM National Pantomime at the famous Ward Theatre. He also did cabaret performances on Jamaica’s North Coast hotel circuit and worked as the first administrator of the performing rights organization, the Jamaica Association of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Ltd (JACAP).

desmond cites Bob Marley as an influence, and while they play similar music, it’s the messages in the songs that feel like a stronger connection. Much like “Three Little Birds,” “Rise Up” has an indescribable uplifting effect. The verses describe the struggle of poverty and the common worker, but the chorus bursts through like the sun through rain clouds. desmond’s voice is powerful yet gentle, winding his way through the words. The beat and guitar are infectious; they will make you dance no matter where you are, or at least tap your toes. The song begins and ends with a pop-like vibe, and that coupled with how catchy the chorus is could send “Rise Up” up the charts this summer.

Along with “Rise Up,” desmond the songwriter’s new album “Happiness Is Priceless” contains nine other tracks, all of the same craft and caliber. The album explores the disparity in the distribution of wealth in the world, and what people will do based on the kind of money they have (or don’t have.) Songs like “Affluenza,” “Kiss and Sell,” and “Hiding My Car,” tell stories about people on all different parts of the wealth spectrum and choices they’ve made. Every song is extremely listenable and polished, it is a solid piece of art. desmond the songwriter is definitely an artist to keep an eye on. On his website it say he “wants to be a global superstar one day,” and that dream may be closer than he thinks.
