The Goldbergs has officially been renewed for a ninth season at ABC. This ’80s comedy based on creator, Adam F. Goldberg’s own family history has become a much-beloved series by both fans and critics alike. The series stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, Sam Lerner, and Jeff Garlin and covers the zany adventures of a dysfunctional, but lovable, family.

The Goldbergs has been on the air for nearly eight years, and now it looks like the show won’t be ending any time soon. Deadline is reporting that the famous comedy series has been renewed for a ninth season. This comes after the unfortunate passing of George Segal, who had been a series regular on the show since the beginning. The Oscar-nominated actor suffered complications from bypass surgery and died at the age of 87 in March of this year. He played Beverly’s (McLendon-Covey) father, Albert “Pops” Solomon.

The Goldbergs star, McLendon-Covey, said previously that the sitcom has no plans to ever recast the character of Pops. ABC paid a touching tribute to the actor by playing a 45-second clip in remembrance of the actor following the news of his death. As of now, it is unclear as to how the showrunners will write in Pops’s departure in the upcoming season.

The Goldbergs has been one of ABC’s top-rated comedies for several years now, so this renewal shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. This news comes at the same time ABC just renewed several other shows including Blackish, The Conners, and The RookieCall Your Mother was canceled, however, after only a single season. The fact that The Goldbergs has been able to air for almost nine seasons now, speaks to its high-quality writing and memorable characters.
