Venom vs Spider-Man Fan Art Pits Tom Hardy Against Andrew Garfield

Movies

Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man from The Amazing Spider-Man and Tom Hardy’s Venom from the film of the same name, face each other down in awesome new fan art. Garfield starred in only two films as the web-slinging hero, just one shy of Tobey Maguire in the Sam Raimi trilogy. Sony’s rendition of the franchise was supposed to have a third and fourth film as well as spinoffs focusing on the Sinister Six and Venom, but poor performances caused the powers that be to abandon the iteration in favor of Tom Holland’s rendition of the character as part of the MCU. The villain-focused spinoffs were subsequently retooled into their own separate timeline.

Hardy portrayed Venom in the repurposed spinoff, released in 2018. A solo feature for the character had been in the works since the ’90s, so the film was really a long time coming. Well-known to superhero fans for providing the most iconic iteration of Batman villain Bane to date, Hardy portrayed a particularly monstrous-looking Venom who is actually an anti-hero.

Digital artist, Eren Gürocak, who goes by erathrim20 on Instagram, has posted a piece of fan art showing a particularly stunning face off between Garfield’s Spider-Man and Hardy’s Venom. Gürocak posts highly detailed fan art of various DC and Marvel properties. By blending various digital editing techniques, the artist creates pieces that could convincingly pass as official art. Fan posters for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, comedic crossovers featuring Deadpool as every Avenger, Miles Morales’s sneakers suspended from a web – it’s all expertly rendered. Check out the piece below:

What’s most impressive about the art is how realistic it appears – it’s hard to discern at first glance whether it’s an edited screencap or not. The tendrils of the symbiote extend around Spider-Man looking up into Venom’s gaping maw, out of which Hardy’s tortured face emerges. This is a moment captured right before an edge-of-your-seat fight breaks out in New York City.

It’s too bad fans never got to see Garfield’s Spider-Man take on Venom. The Amazing Spider-Man is the shortest-lived of the Spider-Man iterations, though it lives on in spiritual successors such as Venom. If Garfield were to face off against a Venom, it probably would have been Hardy’s. As Garfield is expected to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Gürocak’s artwork may not just be wishful thinking. Though fans are far less certain that Hardy’s Venom could appear in the film, Holland will be in Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage. Garfield and Hardy may yet collide as the Spider-Man canons intermingle more and more.
