God truly doesn’t want you to waste your talents he helped bestow upon you. Zack Landry, born in Vacherie, Louisiana had a gift for music, being able to duplicate what he heard on the keyboard and quickly taking up organ and piano not soon after. Over the many years, he’s refined his talents and following a series of difficult times including picking up the pieces of his life following the devastation of hurricane Katrina, he’s been on an enlightening path of releasing some fantastic singles over the last few years, and after an absence in 2020, truly an incredibly hard time for many, he’s made his return with his powerful and moving single “Hold On”.

Landry has an incredible voice with a presence that matches, that creates an experience that makes you feel like you’re on stage with him. His backing choir adds so much power to the song with each repeat of the words “Hold On” as Landry makes it known that you can truly make it through anything as long as you believe and trust in the faith of the lord and your own will to help carry you and it. Faith is a powerful, potent tool and Landry knows it’s not something to waste or take for granted. Landry works in a musical genre that truly lives or dies on the power of the artist. It’s a difficult genre for some and can often come across as pandering and a cash grab, but Landry’s love for his faith, life, and talents shine through.
The message is clear from the beginning as Landry proclaims with an obvious smile on his face and warmth in his heart that “This song says hold on, be strong, you can make it. Yes you can.” while a flurry of instruments surrounds him all bouncing off each other in perfect unison. There’s an almost retro quality that sounds almost like something you’d hear someone like Nile Rodgers would have produced with its bouncy guitar and plucky bass and its perfect use of synth really makes it stand out from your more old school gospel some people are no doubt to be more familiar with. It might be a little difficult to describe this, but there’s a smoothness to the track, not even in just its vocals and production, but it just has this smooth coolness to it.

Landry just has this charisma that really carries this whole performance and it’s this smoothness that’s always exciting to hear. “Take a look in the mirror and see your breakthrough is coming” and you can tell this is very much a “practice what you preach” type song. It never devolves into him using himself as an example of this teaching because Landry in this performance knows this isn’t about himself, it’s about lifting others up, and as the sound goes higher and higher with organ and the electric guitar piercing almost literally to the heavens, the ending as it echos with this beautiful fade-out makes this song stay with you long after it’s over and will no doubt pull you in again and again.
