Warning! Spoilers ahead for Dark Nights: Death Metal: The Last 52 – War of the Multiverses #1
In the latest tie-in issue to Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Dark Nights: Death Metal, the War for the Multiverses has begun, and the Darkest Knight is ready to remake everything with the Last 52 worlds he’s brought into existence, each one darker than the last. As the battle rages on, Daily Planet reporter and love of Superman Lois Lane is horrified to see her greatest nightmare come to life: a dark version of herself that killed the entire Justice League.
Dark Nights: Death Metal: The Last 52 – War of the Multiverses #1 is an anthology issue of short stories, and the one featuring Lois Lane is entitled, “No More Superheroes” written by Regine Sawyer with art by Alitha Martinez. In the story, Lois tells the Daily Planet editor Perry White and photographer Jimmy Olsen to run while she faces this dark nightmare version of herself, needing to know the truth about what this evil Lois Lane has done and why. Surprisingly receiving assistance from Maxima, Lois is able to get face to face with her dark counterpart, but not without the Dark Lois killing Maxima with a blast of her laser vision.

As Lois stands horrified, the Dark Lois reveals that on her Earth she saw superheroes as abominations and menaces, seeking to expose them in her articles. She had been receiving help from her world’s version of Maxima as well until she gave herself powers and went after Superman on her own. Tragically, the resulting damage and chaos saw the Daily Planet being destroyed as well as a museum full of children on a school field trip – one of which was the Dark Lois’ own son. Superman then went on an apology tour, and this version of Lois was his last stop for an interview. However, she was ready for him, wielding amber kryptonite to absorb all of Superman’s powers. The Dark Lois then killed Superman by cutting the Man of Steel’s head off
Wielding the powers of her world’s dead Superman, this Dark Lois Lane then went on a vicious crusade, easily killing the rest of the Justice League and any superheroes she could find, vowing to end them all. What makes her even more terrible is the response of the primary Earth’s Lois, who reveals that all the words, beliefs, and feelings of this other Lois serve as the living embodiment of every dark thought and consideration she herself has ever had. The Dark Lois is very much a personal nightmare made real for her.
Additionally, the story ends horribly as the Dark Lois takes her counterpart by the throat, ready to toss her off the side of the Daily Planet so she’ll scream. However, Lois refuses to scream, as any sound of fear she’d make would send her Superman right to her, and the Dark Lois would subsequently kill him and jeopardize the entire war. As a result, Lois Lane looks to be silently falling to her death at the end of the story, an insane and terrifying cliffhanger if there ever was one. Regardless, seeing Lois Lane becoming the greatest threat and killing any Justice League is truly dark and grim, and just goes to show how dire the current War for the Multiverses truly is in Dark Nights: Death Metal from DC Comics.
