Dead By Daylight Killer Guide: The Spirit | Screen Rant

Movies

In Dead By Daylight, four unarmed survivors fight to stay alive against one killer attempting to sacrifice them to a malevolent creature known as The Entity. Survivors repair generators, search for an escape route, and hide from the killer. Killers have a few special abilities they can use to find and kill or ritually sacrifice the survivors to try and win the game. Dead By Daylight and its accompanying DLC features 22 playable killers, some of which are horror icons from several successful film and TV franchises, including SawStranger Things, and Halloween. Some of the killers, however, are original characters with incredibly powerful abilities.

The Spirit is one such original killer players can use, and her abilities and skills will add a new dimension of terror and difficulty to the game for survivors. Introduced in Chapter 9: Shattered Bloodlines, The Spirit is what remains of undergraduate Rin Yamaoka, a relative of The Oni. She and her mother were killed and dismembered by her father, and she vowed revenge against him. The Spirit can phase in and out of the spirit world, leaving her physical form standing still and visible to the survivors. The Spirit can exploit this ability to trick survivors and make easy hits, as there are very few cues to help survivors stand against her. Here’s everything to know about playing or playing against The Spirit in Dead By Daylight.

Dead By Daylight Killer Guide: The Spirit

The Spirit grins in Dead By Daylight

The Spirit’s Power, Yamaoka’s Haunting, grants her the ability to phase in and out of the spirit world. When this power is active, The Spirit leaves her physical husk, which continues to create a Terror Radius, and can travel around the trial completely invisible to survivors. The Spirit moves more more quickly than usual in the spirit world. All survivors are invisible to her, and she cannot see bloodstains. She can still see scratch marks to indicate a survivor nearby and can still hear any sounds survivors make. Survivors outside The Spirit’s Terror Radius will hear a whooshing sound like a vacuum any time the Power is active. Unfortunately, those inside the Terror Radius will not hear such a sound. When the Power runs out of charge, The Spirit’s physical husk will reappear wherever she moved to within the Grounds in the spirit world.

This makes it possible for killers playing as The Spirit to fake using Yamaoka’s Haunting by standing still near a survivor. The survivor will have to guess whether The Spirit has actually left her husk or if she is standing there, waiting to attack. If the survivor tries to run, it can be an easy hit if The Spirit is still very much in control of her husk. There are Add Ons players can find to make this Power even stronger, including Father’s Glasses, which will allow The Spirt to see bloodstains while in the spirit world, and the Katsumori Talisman, which will increase its duration.

The Spirit has three perks that will initially only appear in her Bloodweb. At Level 30, the teachable versions of these perks will unlock, and players can use them with other killers. They are:

  • Spirit Fury (Level 30)
  • Hex: Haunted Ground (Level 35)
  • Rancor (Level 40)

Spirit Fury allows The Spirit to increase the wrath of The Entity by breaking Pallets. If The Spirit is stunned by a Pallet after breaking a certain number of them, The Entity will break that one too. When Haunted Ground is in use, two Hex Totems will spawn. When a survivor cleanses one of these trick Totems, all survivors suffer the Exposed status effect and can be downed in a single hit. With Rancor active, The Spirit will become obsessed with a single survivor and will see all survivors’ locations each time a generator is completed. The object of The Spirit’s obsession will be able to see The Spirit’s aura each time a generator is completed as well. However, once all the generators are complete, the survivor with which The Spirit is obsessed will receive the Exposed status effect and can be killed by The Spirit.

Dead By Daylight Spirit Killer Upgraded

The Spirit may benefit more from other perks, or from combining her perks with perks from other killers. For example, combining Spirit Fury with Enduring will grant The Spirit free hits against sleeping survivors. Distressing might be a good perk for The Spirit, as it can increase the Terror Radius and make it even harder for survivors near The Spirit’s husk to determine where she is, as they won’t be able to hear the sound cue. It will also allow killers playing The Spirit to better fake using Yamaoka’s Haunting for easy attacks. As with most killers, other game-slowing perks like Sloppy Butcher and Pop Goes the Weasel, and Bloodpoint farming perks like BBQ and Chili, are still good options for The Spirit.

Until recently, though she is not as powerful as The Nurse, survivors tended to dislike playing against The Spirit. This is because the killer and her associated perks and add-ons did very little to provide clues for survivors that might have helped them stand against her. After several updates, however, it is now possible for survivors to hear The Spirit’s footsteps while she is in the spirit world. Her movements will also scare away nearby Crows, which survivors can pay attention to in order to track where she might be going and avoid being caught by her katana when she phases back into the physical world.

Survivors will also stand a better chance of staying alive against The Spirit if they don’t risk leaving a safe spot when her husk is standing still. Whether or not The Spirit is using Yamaoka’s Haunting, it is safer for a survivor to remain wherever they have chosen to shelter than risk running and giving The Spirit an easy hit.
