Lovecraft Country: How Leti Got Her Invulnerability Spell Restored

Movies

WARNING! Major Spoilers for Lovecraft Country ahead

During Lovecraft Country’s season 1 finale, Christina Braithwhite (Abbey Lee) stripped Letitia “Leti” Lewis (Jurnee Smollett) of her invulnerability, but the spell was restored as episode 10, “Full Circle”, reached its end — here’s how.

Throughout the series, Leti has been surrounded by magic whether it comes from Atticus “Tic” Freeman (Jonathan Majors) directly or her sister, Ruby (Wumni Mosaku), insisting that they learn how to cast spells. It isn’t until she discovers that she is pregnant that she truly understand the importance of magic. In order to keep both herself and her unborn baby safe, Leti is granted invulnerability by Christina in exchange for Titus’s pages from the Book of Names. Once the last remaining daughter of the Sons of Adam discovers that Leti and Atticus have the book and are keeping it from her, she strips the expectant mother of the spell out of malice. Right before Christina begins her immortality spell, she throws Leti off of a high tower, killing her. After Atticus discovers she is dead, it appears as if he somehow re-casts the invulnerability spell back onto her, which causes her to rise from the dead.

While it’s possible Atticus may have played a hand in the recasting of the invulnerability spell, it is far more likely that it was Ruby or Christina who actually did it. If Christina did in fact kill Ruby, then it is possible that she recast the spell on Leti in order to keep her promise to the woman she loved. On the other hand, if she is still alive, Ruby could’ve cast the spell. Here’s why it was actually Christina who restored her invulnerability in Lovecraft Country‘s season 1 finale.

Why Christina Restored Leti’s Invulnerability

As Atticus’s body drains of its blood and magical essence, Christina takes his power into her entire being in order to gain immortality — this is why she needed him for the ritual. While it could be argued that Atticus put the invulnerability spell back on Leti, it would beg the question: why didn’t he cast it before they left for Ardham? He knows he isn’t powerful enough to do what’s necessary for the magic to work, and he is wary of practicing something so unpredictable on the people he loves. On the other hand, Ruby has consistently told Leti that they need to learn magic in order to protect themselves. In a bizarre twist, Misha Green revealed in a Rolling Stone interview that it was Christina who actually restored Leti’s invulnerability.

Ruby and Christina developed a romantic relationship, which began after Ruby took the polyjuice potion that allowed her to shapeshift into a white woman named Hilary. Along the way, she picked up some tips and tricks for practicing magic from her lover. In season 1, episode 10, “Full Circle”, Christina tells her the essential tools necessary to cast a successful spell. While Ji-Ah’s kumiho tails wrap around Atticus and Christina, she has a vision related to moments of their lives as they both begin to die. Part of this vision sequence reveals Ruby reciting the invulnerability spell before the scene immediately flashes to Leti laying dead on the ground. This moment caused some confusion. While it appears as though Ruby recast the spell on her sister, it is actually Christina in a Ruby Baptiste disguise. Misha Green clarified this scene further by stating it was Christina who restored her invulnerability in order to keep her promise to Ruby. According to the showrunner, she cast the spell as Leti fell from the tower.

Ji-Ah’s vision provides a brief moment that reveals Christina’s love for Ruby despite feeling betrayed by her. It showcases that, no matter what, the last woman of the Sons of Adam always intended to keep her promise. Ji-Ah’s vision also possibly revealed that Ruby isn’t dead for good, and may return somehow for Lovecraft Country season 2. Even though Christina said she’s dead, the vision sequence revealed that Ruby is laying in a hospital bed, likely in a comatose state like William.
