Rocket League Brings Back Ghostbusters Ecto-1 In Halloween Event

Movies

It’s time to get slimed, as Ghostbusters is invading Rocket League for a Halloween event that will see new cosmetics and the return of the Ecto-1. Rocket League recently went free-to-play on the Epic Games Store, which also shifted all the game’s premium DLC into limited in-game shop items. The car soccer game has had plenty of these items in the past, including partnerships with the Fast and Furious franchise, Back to the Future, and DC Comics. It also has console exclusive cars that reflect each platform holder’s most popular first-party franchises.

The shift to free-to-play has been long expected, ever since Epic Games bought developer Pysonix in May of last year. The company behind Fortnite is positioning the game as its second big online hit, encouraging players to activating it on the Epic Game Store with a $10 off coupon offer that’s good until October 23. Rocket League has retained a massive audience throughout this generation, peaking at over 120,000 players on Steam alone this month despite being recently unlisted on that storefront. With the game also adding crossplay, it’s easy to find like-minded drivers no matter where players are, which should make grinding out this season’s spooky items that much easier.

The Rocket League Haunted Hallows event begins on October 20 across all platforms. Players can complete challenges to unlock items from the world of Ghostbusters as well as enjoy a pair of mode variants exclusive to the event. First, from October 20 to the 26, players can return to Heatseeker from earlier this year on a new Haunted Urban Arena. This mode makes the ball seek out the goal whenever it’s hit, and it builds up speed whenever it’s hit again after that. Don’t cross the streams with the team and there won’t be a problem.

Next week, from October 26 to November 2, players can play Spike Rush on night maps. This radical mode debuted alongside the Ecto-1 in June of 2019 during an ’80s-themed summer event. Cars gain giant metal spikes that can collect the ball, turning the game of car soccer into a twisted capture the flag variant. Ball carriers can’t boost and they’re vulnerable to opposing cars, so teammates have to protect them as they plow their way toward the goal.

Throughout both weeks, players can earn toppers and wheels based on the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Slimer, and the Ghost Trap, among others. In addition to those free unlockables, the in-game shop will be stocked with items from past Haunted Hallows events as well as the iconic Ecto-1 vehicle, which will be available for purchase for 48 hours starting on October 21. The following 48 hours will see the movie’s marshmallow man transform into an explosive goal celebration in another cosmetic item up for sale.

Although it was likely originally timed to coincide with this year’s delayed Ghostbusters sequel, a themed event around the ’80s classic fits in perfectly with a game as wide-reaching as Rocket League. Plenty of games have seen crossovers that don’t always work out as intended, like when Magic: The Gathering threw out its lore for a random injections of zombies. Rocket League is basically a sport, which means that branding the cars as players please just goes with the territory.
