Baltimore singer Cristal Carrington lights up the night with her thrill of a song “See You Dance”. A splash of Español and a heavy dose of electro pop, this R&B goddess is on her way to something pretty big. It’s rare for an R&B/pop artist to have such an impactful first outing, but “See You Dance” from Carrington’s debut album, Revenge, is decadently delicious. Even her name suggests this song pops its top – Cristal Carrington is one to watch.
Uno, dos, tres, quatro, sings the sprite Carrington. She’s bubbly and sizzling. For every three steps and three beats, she leaps the listener into a world of dazzling carnival. The song’s bed is charismatic, too, with strong leanings to the old school 90s pop/jam arena. It’s not a total vintage lovefest, though, as the song creeps closer into the modern atmospheric vibe. Carrington has this very snappy, hip-moving way that she moves the song along. It’s like she’s teasing us with a bombastic flavor, but then just mows her way into a steady groove.
Visually, her music video is also entertaining. She has a few montages of people dancing, and can be seen dancing herself in a lavish silver sequined cocktail dress. I think the video, and the song, really showcases a fun, lively personality. I also really loved the break dancing, giving it yet another nod to the past.
What I enjoy most about “See You Dance” is Carrington’s genuineness. She’s not putting on airs, and I think she really wants to have fun with her listeners. She wants to get them up and moving, having a great time, too. It’s a positive song and a great spring board for an emerging artist. I selfishly wish on her next song she show a bit more depth, more lyrical content. I get that the gist of the song is partying, and having fun, but I challenge her to come up with something a bit more vulnerable. I think she would be surprised to learn that her fans do want to hear more about who she is an artist. I don’t think she’s even chipped away at the surface. “See You Dance” is a great time, but I’d like to hear more about what makes Carrington tick. I’m not wanting her to go full Adele or even Alanis Morrisette, but I’m asking for a bit more depth. Tell me a stronger storyline.
However, if you’re looking for a song that just gets you dancing and you can completely let loose, “See You Dance” is the perfect pick. Just lose yourself into the music bed and the thrilling beats and leave your troubles at the door. What more in a song could you ask for on certain days? You don’t need a dictionary or decoder to read between the lines with Carrington’s words. Along the lines of Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and “Hung Up” from Madonna, it’s a quick journey and one that keeps a smile on the listener’s face. Now what is better than that?
