During today’s digital 2020 Tokyo Game Show events, it was revealed that a younger version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s Impa will be a playable character in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and the internet has exploded with an outpouring of love for her character. While Impa may have been an underappreciated character in Breath of the Wild, she is definitely one of the most highly anticipated cast members in the upcoming Hyrule Warriors follow-up.
A series mainstay since Ocarina of Time, this incarnation Impa was introduced in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the elder of Kakariko Village, which is one of the first locations Link must visit on his journey to save Hyrule from Calamity Ganon. Although Link has lost all memory of Impa before the events of the game following a close shave with death, she remembers the young Hylian warrior from 100 years prior, having fought alongside him in the doomed war against Calamity Ganon. While old, decrepit, and having a rather large head in BOTW, the Hyrule Warriors version of Impa is a young and beautiful Sheikah warrior that more closely resembles Impa’s granddaughter, Paya.

Young Impa debuted during the second trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, but her appearance in a cutscene led viewers to speculate whether or not she would actually be a playable character. Gameplay was later showcased during TGS 2020, which featured an extensive look at Impa’s abilities on the battlefield. The hype behind Impa’s ninja skills and overpowered abilities caused her to trend on Twitter. Accounts like Zelda GIF World, Zelda Universe, Stealth, and Nerdist were among the many who tweeted their love and appreciation for Impa, while tens of thousands more joined in to rave about Impa’s appearance and jaw-dropping abilities in the latest Hyrule Warriors footage.

While gameplay for Breath of the Wild‘s four Champions also debuted in today’s presentation, Impa handily stole the show. Her sudden appearance literally came out of left field, as many people probably hadn’t considered her to be a viable character choice, having only been prior known to players as a tiny, ancient woman with a charming temper. Now that Impa’s been revealed in her prime, it makes the two-month wait for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity even more painful.
