Spenser Confidential 2 Confirmed By Director Peter Berg

Peter Berg has confirmed that Spenser Confidential 2 has been greenlighted by Netflix. The first Spenser Confidential film marked the fifth team-up between Mark Wahlberg and Berg. It’s also a live-action adaptation of Richard B. Parker’s series of Spenser novels, although the film took its own creative liberties in its storytelling. Premiering on Netflix in March, Spenser Confidential boasted an all-star cast that included Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, and Iliza Shlesinger, among others. The action comedy film centered on Wahlberg’s character of Spenser, a former cop who teams up with some unlikely allies to investigate a string of recent murders.

The first Spenser Confidential earned mostly negative reviews, with criticisms lobbied towards the film’s execution. Even though the central performances were enjoyable and the film had impressive action sequences, many felt Spenser Confidential didn’t do much to stand out from the crowd. However, it’s also one of Netflix’s biggest original movies in terms of viewers, meaning there’s a demand for seeing the burgeoning franchise continue. And now, a Spenser Confidential sequel is on the way.

Collider reports that Spenser Confidential 2 has received the go-ahead from Netflix, although plans for the film are still in early stages. More specifically, Berg highlights that the film is already being scripted by Brian Helgeland, who wrote the first script. Although Berg says it’s a matter of “just trying to figure out the dates,” he’s cautiously optimistic that production could begin in late 2021 or early 2022.

Even if Spenser Confidential fans will have to wait a while longer to learn more about the plot, Berg confirms that Wahlberg will be returning in the titular role. But due to the pair’s packed scheduled, Spenser Confidential 2 probably won’t be the next project either Berg or Wahlberg tackles. However, Berg emphasizes that he and Wahlberg will “definitely…do [Spenser Confidential 2]” once timing works out. Considering the dynamic between Berg and Wahlberg is one of the best parts of any films they work on together, this will be welcome news for fans of their previous collaborations.

While there are a few directions Berg and Wahlberg could take Spenser Confidential 2, here’s to hoping that the film picks up from where the original movie left off. Although Spenser had effectively dismantled a criminal empire, he’s captivated by a news report announcing the arrest of an arsonist, who coincidentally happens to be someone Spenser went to high school with. Spenser’s visceral reaction to the news implies that investigating what truly happened may be the next case Spenser takes on; as such, perhaps this pattern of solving a case only to be pulled in by the next one will be one way Berg lays the foundation for a greater Spenser franchise. That being said, regardless of what happens next, viewers and critics alike are in for a wild ride with Spenser Confidential 2.
