PlayStation Plus Is Giving Away $10 In PSN Credit For Its 10th Anniversary

Some PlayStation Plus users are receiving $10 in PSN credit in their account as part of Sony’s 10th anniversary celebration for the online service. While it’s required to play many PlayStation games online, PS Plus also includes a bonus of two free games each month to subscribers as well as discounts on many PSN store items.

While PS Plus used to offer a mix of PS3, PS4 and PS Vita games, Sony recently shrank its free game giveaways considerably. Since early 2019, PS Plus has only given away PS4 games, reducing the number of total free games it rewards subscribers with each month from an average of six down to just two. This July, Sony slightly improved the free game haul, offering three PS4 games to PS Plus subscribers, also in honor of the service’s 10th anniversary.

While getting an extra free game this month was a nice surprise for PlayStation fans, its latest offer may be even better. Sony is reportedly giving away $10 in PSN credit to some PS Plus subscribers for its 10th anniversary, which avoids the common disappointment of already owning the free games PS Plus is giving away and thus not getting anything. However, it seems that not everyone is getting this reward from Sony either. Twitter user Alex Castillo pointed the giveaway out earlier today, tweeting a screenshot of a message from Sony to industry analyst Wario64, who retweeted the message. Several other users replied to the message saying they’d received the bonus as well, with some posting screenshots of their own to prove it. Users from multiple regions are reporting receiving the credit, though not every subscriber has received it. Sony hasn’t yet officially acknowledged the giveaway.

It may be a poor consolation, but Sony is also giving away a free PS4 theme to celebrate the PS Plus anniversary. It’s still available on the PlayStation Store after going up early in June. Sony hasn’t announced any future plans to continue the anniversary celebration, but then again, it didn’t announce the $10 giveaway ahead of time either.

PlayStation Plus free games are a welcome treat each month for subscribers, but they’re not enough to justify the service to many players, and it’s not clear what Sony’s plans are for the service going forward. With Xbox Game Pass increasingly looking like the best deal in gaming, Sony may need to revamp its own subscription services to compete once the PS5 launches.
