Crysis Remastered Is Still Releasing On Switch In July

Developer Crytek says that Crysis Remastered will still hit its original launch date for the Nintendo Switch, with no word about other consoles. The developer announced a delay for Crysis Remastered on all platforms at the beginning of July.

Crytek teased a new Crysis game with a mysterious tweet back in April, then confirmed that Crysis Remastered was coming to consoles and PC just a few days later. It didn’t announce a release date at the time, instead teasing the release of a trailer for the game dropping on July 1st. However, the day before the trailer was meant to go live, a page for Crysis Remastered appeared on the Microsoft Store containing both the trailer and a July 23rd release date. Fan reaction to the trailer wasn’t what Crytek was likely hoping for, with players complaining that the graphics didn’t look up to par. Crytek responded by delaying the game to an unspecified date, saying that it would use the time to polish it.

With Crysis Remastered’s planned release date just under two weeks away, Crytek now says that the Nintendo Switch version will be coming out on time after all, announcing the release date on Twitter. The remaster’s release will mark the first time that any Crysis game has been available on a Nintendo platform. Crytek didn’t provide any reasoning for the decision or information about the game on other platform, but hinted that it would be providing more details soon, saying simply, “Watch this space for further updates.”

It might not be surprising that a remaster of a game from 2007 doesn’t look quite as good as a current-generation game, but that’s a more important matter for Crysis. When Crysis was released, it blew fans away with its graphics, particularly for its PC version. The game was used as a benchmark of visual quality for years to come, putting even newer releases to shame and pushing PCs to their limits for years after its initial debut. Because of that legacy, it’s no wonder that Crytek would take complaints about Crysis’ graphics seriously.

While players on other platforms still seem to be out of luck, the cancellation of Crysis Remastered’s Switch delay is at least good news for Nintendo fans. It’s not clear what changed Crytek’s mind, or why only the Switch version is being affected, but it’s possible that the console’s relatively limited hardware left less room for improvement than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which might still be able to deliver better visuals than were seen in the leaked trailer.
