Netflix’s Eurovision Trailer Is A Will Ferrell/Rachel McAdams Music Video

Movies

Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell star in the trailer for Netflix’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The upcoming movie, which will premiere on June 26, centers around two Icelandic performers, Sigrit Ericksdottir and Lars Erickssong, who have the opportunity to perform during the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Though the movie is fictional, it’s based on the actual music contest, which brings dozens of countries together to compete. Unfortunately, this year’s competition was cancelled due to the coronavirus, making it the first time the event’s been cancelled since its introduction in 1956.

In addition to Ferrell and McAdams, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga stars Pierce Brosnan, Dan Stevens, and Demi Lovato. The movie is a reunion of sorts for Ferrell and McAdams, who were both in 2005’s Wedding Crashers. However, McAdams played a leading role, while Ferrell appeared in an uncredited cameo as Chazz Reinhold. Eurovision has another Wedding Crashers connection as well, as David Dobkin directed both movies. At this point in their careers, both McAdams and Ferrell are reliable comedy performers, so a team up makes sense.

In lieu of a traditional movie trailer, Netflix ANZ has released a music video for Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The title of the song is “Volcano Man,” with the video featuring McAdams and Ferrell in hilariously over-the-top outfits, as well as an actual volcano. Though Ferrell provides vocals, My Marianne sings McAdams’ portion. Check out the video below:

Netflix has made an effort to attract big names for feature films in the last few years. Just this week, the streamer landed Ball and Chain, a superhero movie that will feature Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt as a married couple. Netflix has even gotten into the awards game, with last year’s Marriage Story receiving an impressive six Oscar nominations. It also featured big stars like Scarlett Johansson, Laura Dern, and Adam Driver. Other movies, like Dolemite Is My NameThe Irishman, and The Two Popes, also featured top talent and did well on the awards circuit, boosting Netflix’s profile in the process.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga looks like a lot of fun and exactly the sort of movie that could do well right now. Though hopefully most people will be out of their homes by June, the world will likely still be looking for a distraction at that point. Plus, with the real Eurovision cancelled this year, fans of that might be happy to hear they can at least experience a fictional version. Judging by the music video, Ferrell and McAdams are leaning into the inherent silliness of the premise, which should make for a funny film.
