Patty Jenkins Already Has Wonder Woman 3 & Amazon Spinoff Story Ideas

Movies

Even if she won’t be around to see it through, Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has plenty of story ideas for Wonder Woman 3 and the planned Amazonian spin-off. Jenkins made history when she was hired to direct 2017’s Wonder Woman, which earned great financial success and critical acclaim. Warner Bros. was smart to nab her for the sequel, which is currently expected to arrive in theaters this August after being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even after some expressed their hope that Wonder Woman 1984 would move to streaming following the delay, Jenkins stood by her decision to release the film in theaters.

Despite Wonder Woman 1984 still being months away, fans are already looking ahead to the future for Gal Gadot’s superhero. Wonder Woman 3 is widely considered to already be a done deal, but as to when it will happen and whether Jenkins will be back is another matter. Additionally, Jenkins revealed last year that a spin-off surrounding the Amazons of Themyscira is being considered by Warner Bros. That film is still in the early stages of development, but Jenkins has no plans to direct it.

Despite that, Jenkins is very much involved with the spin-off’s story, as well as that for Wonder Woman 3. She previously said the story for Wonder Woman 3 is complete, but could change in the future, and her latest comments seem to reflect that. While talking to Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar) about the future of the franchise, Jenkins said this:

I’m not going to nail down a fresh thought about it until this movie comes out, because I kind of want to give myself a palette cleanser, and be fresh of mind. But yeah, there’s an arc that I have in mind for the first movie, and then the second movie, and then the Amazon movie, and then the third movie.

Jenkins seems to have kept all three Wonder Woman films in mind when crafting Diana’s arc, a smart move that will likely enrich each installment. Fans are already eager to see how Diana has changed since her first film, which put her in the trenches of World War I and opened her eyes to the world of men. Wonder Woman 1984 will pick up decades later with Diana living a quieter life, but still protecting those who need it. Anticipation is certainly high for the film, and Jenkins has promised some pretty remarkable scenes that could even rival Wonder Woman’s best sequence, No Man’s Land.

Regardless of whether Jenkins will be back to direct Wonder Woman 3, it’s clear her fingerprints will be all over it. Considering all the work she’s put into Diana’s story so far, that’s only fair. It’ll be nice to know that she’ll also have a hand in the Amazon spin-off, since that will ensure it matches what was previously set up in the other films. Wonder Woman 1984 is still on the horizon, and it could even provide a clue about where Diana will go in the future. Only time will tell.
