The Purge 5 makes all crime legal again for twelve fateful hours this summer, and here’s everything we know about the Blumhouse sequel so far. It’s often said that everyone has a dark side, but thankfully, most people seem to keep theirs in check. By allowing even the most heinous crimes to be committed without legal consequence, The Purge scenario highlights what might happen to society if anyone trying to keep darker urges at baby was all of a sudden encouraged to “release the beast.”

The Purge concept is an undeniably interesting one, albeit something that (hopefully) could never actually be possible in real life. Still, it’s successfully supported four Purge films to big profits at the box office, becoming one of Blumhouse Productions’ signature franchises along the way, and even leading to a TV show that’s already produced two seasons. The Purge is big business, but all good things must come to an end, and it looks like The Purge 5 might be that.

Franchise creator James DeMonaco has teased that The Purge 5 will end the Purge saga for good, although that could well turn out to be as true as Friday the 13th Part 4 being subtitled The Final Chapter. Regardless, here’s what we know about cinema’s latest Purge night.

The Purge 5 Release Date

the purge 5

In October 2018, while promoting The Purge TV series, creator James DeMonaco revealed that he had an idea for The Purge 5, which he intended to be the conclusion of the franchise. By May 2019, The Purge 5 – now officially titled The Forever Purge, as of April 8, 2020 – was assigned a release date of July 10, 2020 by producer Blumhouse Productions and distributor Universal Pictures. However, it’s unclear if the Coronavirus outbreak will last long enough to require a delay of that date, as has already happened to so many films.

The Purge 5 Cast & Director

Ana de la Reguera in Narcos

The Purge 5‘s cast will be lead by Ana de la Reguera (Narcos), in an unknown role. Tenoch Huerta (Narcos: Mexico) is onboard as the male lead, and actress Leven Rambin (True Detective) has also secured a role. There are no big stars in the cast of The Purge 5, at least that have been announced so far. Frustratingly, absolutely no details on the sequel’s characters have been released yet. Everardo Gout (Luke Cage) is directing this time out, from a script by DeMonaco himself.

The Purge 5 Story Details

The Purge Election Year movie reviews

As with the characters, plot details for The Purge 5 are entirely unknown, outside of reports that the film will leave behind the urban environments of the prior films for a more rural location. It’s also going to take place after The Purge: Election Year, as 2018’s The First Purge was a prequel set before the first film. Election Year ended with Purge Night being abolished, but signs pointed to a possible civil war taking place as a result. Now that the final title, The Forever Purge, has been revealed, those teases seem ready to be borne out, as it looks like post-Purge Night America might well just be stuck living under Purge conditions 24/7/365.
