Venom 2’s New Title Explained: What Let There Be Carnage Means

Movies

The upcoming Venom sequel officially has a title: Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage - but what exactly does the subtitle mean for the forthcoming film? The first Venom proved to be a huge commercial success for Sony back in 2018, grossing over $850 million at the worldwide box office. Given that, it was expected that Sony would greenlight a sequel, one that would have Carnage appear as the main villain.

Venom‘s post-credits scene teased the inclusion of Carnage, after all, and when a sequel was announced, it was revealed that Woody Harrelson would be reprising his role as Cletus Kasady from the stinger. He’ll be joining Tom Hardy, who is returning as Eddie Brock. The sequel will see the pair go toe-to-toe and there are even rumors that Tom Holland will cameo as Spider-Man. While it was originally set to open on October 2, 2020, Venom 2 will now release in summer 2021.

In addition to its new release date, Venom 2‘s official title is now Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage. The Venom 2 title notably alludes to the inclusion of Carnage, who will be the main villain, and delivering on his promise made in Venom‘s post-credit scene of how “there’s gonna be carnage“. While many fans may have wanted the title to be Maximum Carnage, in order to reference the character’s famed story arc from Marvel Comics, Let There Be Carnage is a direct play on Kasady’s comments from the first movie and it still gets the name Carnage in there. It promises two things: Carnage is the villain and there will certainly be chaos throughout the movie, thus continuing Kasady’s threat.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage, beyond being an obvious continuation of Kasady’s statement in prison, is an interesting choice for the sequel, as it’s rather unexpected. Venom 2 was originally just Venom 2, but adding Let There Be Carnage feels more like a title that would’ve been used in the 2000s instead of the 2020s. Considering that the first movie was noted for feeling like a 2000s-era movie, perhaps this is right in line with what Sony wants from the sequel.

How much of Carnage’s story from the comics, including Maximum Carnage, is used in Venom: Let There Be Carnage remains to be seen, but from this title, Sony is surely promising a lot. They’re not hiding the fact that Kasady is the villain, which means he should be in the film for a substantial amount of time. Given what Kasady says in the first movie, perhaps he will exclaim, “Let there be carnage!” at some point in the sequel.
