In the film industry, Warner Brothers holds the rights to the Harry Potter film franchise and Disney makes the Maleficent movies. Sadly, audiences will never see a duel between those magical creatures because of this very fact.
But that does not stop the hypothetical questions. For example, in a battle between Maleficent and Voldemort, who would win? Or might it just be too close to call? Both are magical beings of great strength, but the moral compasses of the characters might be the deciding factors.
10 Voldemort: Only One Achilles Heel
In the entire Harry Potter series, only one thing seems to stop Voldemort from carrying out his evil plans. This would be Harry Potter himself.
For the rest of the characters Voldemort faces, they are no match. Harry is the only one who regularly escapes from the Dark Lord’s clutches. This does not bode well for Maleficent’s chances in a duel with Voldemort. Unless she, too, can conjure a lightning bolt scar on her forehead, Voldemort would have nothing to fear.
9 Maleficent: Healing Ability
Voldemort was consistently frustrated by Harry’s survival against his powers. He might end up feeling the same from Maleficent’s actions.
From the outset of her first live-action solo film, Maleficent shows that she has the ability to provide healing magic on living things. Might she be able to do the same for herself? The movies never tackled this question, but it could be quite the pertinent skill against Voldemort.
8 Voldemort: Can See Through A Snake’s Eyes
There is nothing in either the Harry Potter books or films that points to Voldemort being an Animagus, but that does not mean he’s afraid to be snakelike. Through his trusted companion and Horcrux, Nagini, he can see through a snake’s eyes.
This definitely gives him an advantage over Maleficent when it comes to furtiveness. However, he is inhibited by the fact that he cannot actually become a snake at will.
7 Maleficent: Can See Through A Dragon’s Eyes
Conversely, Maleficent definitely has the capacity to turn into a massive, fire-breathing dragon. Granted, a dragon is much more conspicuous than a snake, but this hardly seems to matter much, especially when a dragon could obliterate a snake in mere seconds.
Besides, Voldemort is no dashing Prince Philip. He could never slay the beast and save the day because it’s not in his nature. He also has a better chance of surviving the flames than most.
6 Voldemort: Occlumency
Voldemort, in the Wizarding world, is deft at a number of magical abilities and talents. Of course, Occlumency is included in his vast resume.
Thanks to this power, Voldemort can close his mind to any who dare to read it and predict what he plans to do next. He also has the ability to utilize his mental connection with others to make them think that certain things are transpiring that might not be. He might not have this tether on Maleficent, but his mastery of mental manipulation is sure to come in handy.
5 Maleficent: Hypnotic Powers
Of course, Maleficent is no slouch when it comes to mental manipulation either. In the original Sleeping Beauty film, she is shown to be messing with Philip’s mind as an act of combat. She does not always need to use strength or magic to fight when hypnosis is on her side.
There might be a spell in the Wizarding world that could counteract Maleficent’s abilities. Yet, her deftness at hypnosis might be all the power she needs.
4 Voldemort: Nearly Immortal
No matter how many visions Maleficent implants in Voldemort’s head, it will not make a lick of difference if he continues to survive every attack she throws at him. In the Harry Potter universe, Voldemort has made Horcruxes for himself, keeping him nearly immortal.
If he made another Horcrux that was, say, a grain of sand in the bottom of a random ocean, he’d be nearly unbeatable. No magic that Maleficent has could touch him, unless she’s willing to go on a hunt first.
3 Maleficent: Soft Spots
Throughout all seven books and eight movies, Voldemort is a character who embodies pure evil. He never once has a redeeming moment, remaining evil until the very end of his character arc.
In Sleeping Beauty, this is the same for Maleficent. But in her solo movies, when Angelina Jolie takes on the character’s mantle, she is much more humanized. At times, the soft spots get the better of her and she ends up as more of a hero than a villain. Unfortunately for her, Voldemort would definitely see this as a weakness and try to use it to his advantage.
2 Voldemort: Power Through Wands
While Voldemort, played by Ralph Fiennes, definitely has the advantage in aggression and ability, he is at a disadvantage when it comes to the method of channeling his magic. For Voldemort, he has some innate magic, but he is mostly in need of his wand to conjure up his most powerful spells of attack.
He can still fight well without his wand, as evidenced by his soaring tumble through Hogwarts with Harry during the last film. But if Maleficent can knock that magical stick away from him, she might be able to gain the upper hand.
1 Maleficent: Innate Strength
This is thanks in large part to the fact that Maleficent was always a fairy and her magic came from within. Granted, Voldemort was always a wizard, but his powers required honing and training. Maleficent, on the other hand, has never known weakness.
Maybe this is a point in Voldemort’s favor if Maleficent gets to be too haughty. But the fact that her strength comes from within and can be manifested in myriad manners and without a wand is enough to give her the advantage in this category. Ultimately, however, it seems like Voldemort would definitely have the odds in his favor in a tense battle.
