Clone Wars Season 7 Brings Back Major Mandalorian Character From Rebels

Movies

Warning! SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7, episode 7 ahead.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 doesn’t just bring back Bo-Katan Kryze, leader of the Nite Owls, it also brings back another Mandalorian character from Star Wars Rebels – Ursa Wren. Mandalore has a large role to play in The Clone Wars season 7, with upcoming episodes expected to cover the Siege of Mandalore – an event wherein Ahsoka and Captain Rex fight alongside Bo-Katan and the Mandalorian Resistance to oust Maul.

Previously on The Clone Wars, Maul took control of Mandalore by allying his crime syndicate, the Shadow Collective, with the terrorist organization, Death Watch, of which Bo-Katan is a member. After removing Duchess Satine Kryze (who is also Bo-Katan’s sister) from power, Maul challenged Death Watch’s leader, Pre Vizsla, to a duel to decide who would rule Mandalore in her place. The former Sith defeated and killed Vizsla, and as a result, claimed from him the Darksaber. This infuriated Bo-Katan, who declares that an outsider would never rule Mandalore, leading in those loyal to her forming a resistance to Maul’s rule. It’s during this point in time that The Clone Wars season 7 shows Bo-Katan and two of her Nite Owls on Pyke, where they spy a familiar Togruta on the run.

In Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7, episode 7, “Dangerous Debt”, Ahsoka, Trace, and Rafa are on the run from the Pykes, having blown their deal by dumping the spice they were supposed to deliver. It’s during their escape that Bo-Katan first sees Ahsoka, and when she later regroups with her fellow Nite Owls, they observe Ahsoka evading arrest. Bo-Katan believes she’s the same Jedi she’s met before (and she is), while the Mandalorian to her right remarks that the Jedi’s presence on Pyke may compromise their mission. And it’s this Mandalorian who is not just any Nite Owl – she is Ursa of Clan Wren and the mother of Star Wars Rebels‘ Sabine.

Ursa and Sabine Wren on Star Wars Rebels

Audiences first meet Ursa Wren during the Star Wars Rebels season 3 episode, “Legacy of Mandalore”, when Sabine returns home with the Darksaber hoping to convince her family to take a stand against the Empire. Ursa, however, is fearful of earning her family more of the Empire’s wrath and at first sides with Gar Saxon, the Imperial Viceroy. But when Sabine eventually duels Saxon for the Darksaber and wins, Ursa shoots and kills him, preventing Saxon from shooting her daughter in the back. Soon after, Ursa sends word to Bo-Katan that Clan Wren has risen up against the Empire. Together, they overthrow Saxon’s successor and following their victory, Sabine presents Bo-Katan with the Darksaber, signalling that she is who the clans will rally behind as the rightful leader of Mandalore.

Knowing this, the reveal that Ursa Wren is working with Bo-Katan and the Mandalorian Resistance during The Clone Wars makes perfect sense. In fact, Clone Wars and Rebels creator, Dave Filoni, has previously shared that he always believed Ursa Wren to be among the Death Watch members present when Maul kills Vizsla. As such, Ursa obviously leaves with Bo-Katan and must fight alongside her in the Siege of Mandalore. Following Maul’s defeat, Bo-Katan is briefly made Regent of Mandalore, but she loses her position when she refuses to serve the new Galactic Empire. It’s at this point that Ursa and Clan Wren likely swear their allegiance to Clan Saxon and the Empire, fearing for their safety, but all along Ursa’s true allegiance lies with Bo-Katan and Mandalore. Come Star Wars Rebels, Ursa needs to be reminded of that by her daughter, but during Star War: The Clone Wars season 7, Ursa is right at Bo-Katan’s side, ready to fight for a free Mandalore.
