The Justice League is Going To War Against… The Amazons?

Movies

The Justice League has their hands full at the moment with an invasion of supermen, but in Justice League #46 the heroes are potentially facing an even greater challenge at the hands of Greek mythology’s superwomen: The Amazons.

This fight takes place during an upcoming arc that promises the Justice League’s very own cold war, “Vengeance is Thine.” The team will find themselves in Antarctica at the mythic pit of Tartarus where there seems to have been a jailbreak of epic proportions. Given the type of monster trapped in those depths, the world is in serious trouble, and the Justice League might be in more trouble than they know – from themselves. One of the escapees was the Spectre, and without a human host, his thirst for revenge will threaten to drive the world mad (quite literally). A solicit for Justice League #45 hints that the Spectre’s effects will directly warp the team’s sense of unity. The connection to Tartarus will lead the heroes to Wonder Woman’s home, Themyscira, in search of answers. Though there the team might just find that they are in more danger from Greek mythology’s heroes than its villains.

A new solicitation from DC Comics pits the Justice League’s against one of their own’s family of expertly trained warriors. Amidst their own internal turmoil, the Justice League will be facing off with the Amazon’s fierce fighting force. Thanks to Spectre’s influence, the denizens of Themyscira are feeling less than hospitable. When the Justice League trespasses on their land, not even the presence of Wonder Woman will be able to broker a peace it seems. From Gary Frank’s cover it looks like it will be an uphill battle for the team, especially given the influence of Spectre on their morale.

Justice League #46 2020 cover

This run of the Justice League has not been without its team conflict to be sure. So far the team has faced – among many, many other trials -  Ultraviolet (or ultraviolent) Lantern, dark secrets from the pasts of several heroes, heroes inside heroes, a confrontation with the Justice League of Tomorrow, and look at many “future” selves. It does not look like 2020 is going to slow anything down for the team as the hits (both internal and external) keep coming. The future promise of team turmoil is particularly interesting given the series’ current context. The last issue, Justice League #40, raised some serious questions about the Justice League’s hierarchy that could re-emerge in this later arc.

Given that Wonder Woman is at the center of this conflict (both in the story and on the cover), Venditti has an excellent opportunity to further explore the alienation that Diana constantly feels. The Amazon’s origins have been the target of several comics recently, and the events unfolding in Wonder Woman’s most current story line mean that her home life is fraught to say the least. A recurring theme in her mythology is that by operating in the world outside Themyscira, Wonder Woman is never fully able to be at home or with her team. With Spectre stirring the pot, Diana might be experiencing not only old resentments within the Justice League but also toward the sisters that she has had to leave behind. She might also face seriously heightened backlash from Amazons resistant to both her birth and her mission in this fight. Further, Diana’s personal connection to this event could definitely play into her prominent role in DC’s new history.

Will the Justice League and the Amazons be able to remember that there is an actual threat that needs their attention? Or will the in-fighting prove too much for either group to recover from? With many battles for the team between then and now, hopefully the Justice League will have recovered enough to face the very Spirit of Vengeance. Read the full solicit below:
