Last night’s episode of Married At First Sight put a lot of things into perspective. Everything that glitters isn’t gold and first impressions may not be lasting impressions. Just when you thought you knew what direction things were going, a twist appears. I was left in shock, horror and embarrassed for some of the cast.
Three pairs of newlyweds make the most of their honeymoon, while two couples aren’t the picture of happiness. One couple attempts to heal their fractured marriage. Despite sunny skies, there are rough seas ahead for a couple of these stranger spouses. Let’s get straight to the recap!
Derek & Katie
Katie Conrad and Derek Sherman are still basking in newlywed bliss. As they get to know each other, they can see why they were matched. Derek even thinks he is well on his way to falling in love. Let’s hope Katie has long forgotten her “ex” that she couldn’t stop raving about before the wedding.

Trouble may be brewing in paradise. Katie is becoming nervous about going back home and living together. In a post-production interview, she hints Derek may be smothering her already. Hmmm… Will Katie start feeling like her marriage is a one night stand, that has outstayed their welcome?
Austin & Jessica
Austin Hurd and Jessica Studer are the most normal couple of the bunch. They are already talking about their future plans within their marriage. I will admit they are a cute couple, but unbearably boring. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why boring people are necessary on TV. But I also understand why remotes have a fast forward button as well.

Austin and Jessica discuss religion and how that will play a role in their marriage. They both believe in a higher power, but don’t attend a place of worship regularly. Because they want to have children in the future, they want to explore the topic more in the near future. Later that night, the two share a romantic dinner. I think it’s cute they both find ways to cater to the other. Poor Austin is even trying to go to bed and wake up earlier.
Meka & Michael
Meka Jones and Michael Watson decide to forego an uncomfortable group trip with the rest of the couples. It seems like they both are frustrated and waiting on the other to make the first move. I’m a little disappointed that Michael was presented as so mature and zen. He can’t seem to find a haiku or even a downward dog move to get past this obstacle. Whining in the hotel about being a failure isn’t going to fix your marriage. Meka, stop holding a grudge. Find a way to at least be friendly with your stranger husband.

Meka and Michael finally decide to at least pretend to be cordial and go on an outing to get to know each other better. Michael opens up by talking more about his love of teaching while Meka sits stone-faced. This girl isn’t letting him out of the dog house that easily. LMAO! As the day progresses Meka starts to thaw her frozen heart, just a bit. Maybe there is hope!
Well, I thought there was hope. Meka lays out some house rules, before they even move together. Sigh! This is your husband, not your child. I really hope she watches this season and realizes how aggressive she comes off at times. Who wants to be around someone who is so stern? At least Michael didn’t rock the boat and just smiled his way out of her laundry list of demands. He is allowed back into the room that night, after he goes to bed in the robe as required by Meka.
Mindy & Zach
Mindy Shiben and Zach Justice are so cringy it’s ridiculous. Their interactions seem forced, to say the least. Zach would clearly rather being doing anything but hanging out with his wife. The other couples discuss when they want to have children. When Mindy expresses interest in having children with him, he looks at her like she is insane. Mindy, did you forget he told you he isn’t attracted to you? Well, I didn’t! Zach thinks nothing of telling all of the men that he isn’t attracted to his wife as well. He claims he is trying to establish a friendship in order to see if there could be sparks in the future.

Zach asks Mindy her thoughts on their marriage, thus far. She questions why he isn’t wearing his ring anymore. He claims he forgets to put on jewelry. Yet he is donning a watch and bracelet on his wrist. He then redirects the conversation back to the lack of attraction conversation. Chile please, Mindy tell this guy he isn’t every woman’s dream. Mindy is extremely offended and asks “what do you want me to do, get breast implants.” Zach is a complete douche bag and he isn’t even attractive to me.
Mindy is so frustrated she calls Dr. Viviana Coles about Zach’s behavior. Not only is Zach not attracted to his wife, but he doesn’t want her to use words like husband towards him. WTF! Did this dude think this show was a Tinder date, rather than an actual marriage? I actually feel bad for Mindy. Their relationship is quickly becoming reminiscent of Kate Sisk and Luke Cuccurullo from a previous season.
Brandon & Taylor
Taylor Dunklin and Brandon Reid seem to be in a better place now that she isn’t disturbing his beauty sleep with a camera. Brandon admits that he and his wife have had some issues. He blames the cameras and production for his diva like behavior. According to him, he is just a shy private person who just happened to get married to a stranger and sign up to film it. Insert eye roll emoji here.
While out on a boat trip with all of the couples, Brandon’s insecurities start to peek out. He reveals that his wife has a large social media presence and seems a little bothered by the attention. I guess he isn’t accustomed to not being the star in the relationship. Brandon admits to the other husbands that he has made mistakes, but feels like Taylor has taken it all in stride. Meanwhile, Taylor confesses to the girls that her hubby is a bit of a moody princess. Although she doesn’t like his behavior at times, she appreciated his sweet gestures. Nice gesture or not, I would have to give Brandy Brandon a piece of my mind about his nasty attitude.

On the last night of their honeymoon, Taylor strokes Brandon’s ego. When she asks her husband to move his hands to take a picture, the green eyed monster rears his head. Little does she know, Brandon doesn’t care for her social media stardom. He is leery of women who have huge followings because they may not be real. Brandon attempts to soften the blow by stating that she has been able to put her phone down at times to enjoy the moment.
I’m sure Taylor has gained more followers now after tonight’s episode. Brandon’s abrasive behavior becomes directed at production. Upset that he didn’t get food when he wants, he has a complete tantrum and refuses to film. It’s so bad that Taylor attempts to talk to him. She tells him she doesn’t want to be married to that side of him. This comment infuriates him to the point he refuses to pack his own belongings. He then has the nerve to yell and curse at his wife and everyone else on the bus to the airport. Oh, hell no! Taylor, you may need lessons from Meka on how to let a man know you won’t deal with his bull$#!%.
