Here’s a recap of The Dragon Prince’s climactic season 3 finale. Netflix’s animated fantasy series The Dragon Prince is the brainchild of Avatar: The Last Airbender writer and executive producer Aaron Ehasz and game developer Justin Richmond. The series is set in a fantasy world divided in two – the magical land of Xadia where dragons and elf tribes live and five human kingdoms – and focuses on the tense relations between the two regions. It also centers on the unlikely bond formed between two human princes and an elf assassin (Callum, Ezran, and Rayla) as they embark on a quest to bring together the warring factions.

The first season of The Dragon Prince saw Callum, Ezran and Rayla journey into elf territory to deliver an egg housing the future Dragon Prince back to his mother. Meanwhile, back in Callum and Ezran’s human kingdom of Katolis, their father King Harrow was killed and his advisor Viren – a powerful mage and The Dragon Prince’s primary antagonist – plotted to seize the throne. The second season of the anime series focused on Viren’s attempts to rally the five human kingdoms to wage a war against Xadia as Callum, Ezran, and Rayla continued their quest to reunite the now hatched baby dragon Zym with his mother.
The Dragon Prince season 3 upped the ante considerably as Viren overthrew the Katolis throne and conspired with evil elf Aaravos to lead an army into Xadia. The Dragon Prince season 3 finale “The Final Battle” saw Viren and his massive army arrive at the dragon palace Storm Spire ready to wage battle against Callum, Ezran and Rayla and their Xadian allies. A surprisingly brutal skirmish followed but just as Viren’s forces were about to get the upper hand, his human detractors rocked up and joined forces with Xadia to take them out.
Viren and Aaravos, meanwhile, used the battle as a distraction to slip into the Storm Spire so they could drain Zym’s life force. Luckily for the young dragon, Rayla threw both Viren and herself off the cliff Storm Spire sits upon and was saved by Callum before she hit the deck. As Viren’s army was defeated and the man himself plummeted to his death, Zym’s mother Zubeia awoke from a long slumber and was finally reunited with her son.
The conclusion to The Dragon Prince season 3 suggested that peace might be restored between humans, elves and dragons. However, the finale threw a wrench in the works when it was revealed Viren’s daughter Claudia had resurrected him from death and Aaravos had spun himself a cocoon and was busy metamorphosizing into a new, probably more evil form. Looks like that final battle wasn’t so final after all and more trouble could be on the horizon in The Dragon Prince season 4.
