Cruel Kylo Ren Promo Twists the Knife Into Grieving Star Wars 9 Fans

Movies

The Rise of Skywalker has been in theaters for a full week now. Most hardcore fans have made their way to theaters to check out the final installment in the sequel trilogy. However, there are more than a few who have been too busy with the holidays to break away and see the movie. With that being said, the official Star Wars U.K. Twitter account has come under fire for posting a promo that gives away too much, while pointing to some perceived flaws. There are SPOILERS for The Rise of Skywalker below, so read ahead at your own risk.

The latest promo for The Rise of Skywalker is focused on Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. “The Journey Comes to an End” is pasted all over the footage and many believe it has to do with Kylo Ren/Ben Solo’s death at the conclusion of the movie. It certainly does give off those vibes, but that may only be apparent to those who have seen or read about the movie over the past few weeks. While there are a few Star Wars fans who are mad about the spoiler aspects, more of them seem to be bummed out that they killed off the character.

“Thanks for twisting the knife in our gut,” says one Star Wars fan on Twitter. “Cruel and heartless.” This response is not rare at all. Many people were not excited to see Ben Solo come back to the light and they definitely were not happy to see the character die at the end of the movie. Several other fans call out The Rise of Skywalker promo for being “rude” and “sadistic.”

The hashtags “Bring Back Ben Solo” and “Ben Solo Deserves Better” have been pretty popular on social media over the past few days, thanks in part to The Rise of Skywalker promo. In the end, J.J. Abrams was not going to come close to pleasing everybody, though it is believed that the decision to kill off Ben Solo was made at the last moment. It’s not clear if redemption was always in the cards, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that the death was a last minute addition to the script, thrown in during reshoots.

While there is certainly some anger of The Rise of Skywalker, that was always to be expected. Some fans treat the franchise like a religion, so having it be a letdown was inevitable. Regardless, the final installment in the Skywalker saga is number one at the box office for the second straight weekend in a row and is nearing the $1 billion mark. Lucasfilm and Disney will ultimately have the last laugh when the dust settles. You can check out the offending promo for The Rise of Skywalker below, along with some criticism, thanks to the Star Wars U.K. Twitter account.
