Interview with David Leask

Celebrity, Music, News

How would you classify your music?

Song-driven Celtic soul & roots Americana

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Darrell Scott, Marcus Hummon, Hothouse Flowers,  Waterboys,  Blue Nile

What do you want fans to take from your music?

I want them to connect something in their own lives with a lyric or a melody that makes them feel something.  It’s what I’d call “meeting in the music.”

How’s the music scene in your locale?

It’s one that seems to have more cover venues than original music but a scene filled with great music and musicians nonetheless.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

I love concerts that are more stripped down to hear how a great song can stand on its own without large production and the live show spectacle.   The “Songs in the round” format is inspiring and I’ve seen many in Nashville where they cross genres and that’s cool.  I also love listening to bands like Sisters Euclid live to watch and hear the musicians follow and take each other on a journey down improvisation road.  That’s inspiring and exciting to me to feel the tension of risk and discovery.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

I think “Between Him & Me” is a favourite because it’s a unique personal take on a potentially contentious subject.  Also, “When You Think No One Loves You”, because of the rawness in the lyric and production being tracked live off the floor with just voice and piano.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

I am trying to be more disciplined to follow the muse whenever it calls no matter what time of day, in the middle of the night for example, and catch those ideas as they flow through.  Also, I’m trying to experiment with more improvisation using looping in my live shows.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

I’d love to have a chance to hang with Marcus Hummon and write with him.

What’s next for you?

I am in the middle of working on my next record which is a very exciting concept record like no other.  That’s all I can say right now!
