Baby Yoda Visits SNL Weekend Update to Shade Baby Groot

Movies

Baby Yoda has some words for Baby Groot. The breakout star of The Mandalorian appeared on the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update. Obviously, it wasn’t the real Baby Yoda, aka The Child, on the show. Instead, they had cast member Kyle Mooney dress up in a horrifying costume that sort of resembled the character in his space pod. As one Star Wars fan noted, if the character looked and sounded like that on the Disney+ show, there’s a good chance Mando would have let him die.

Kyle Mooney’s Baby Yoda talks like a gangster and he has beef with rival Baby Groot, who he promises to snap like a twig if his fellow Disney peer doesn’t stop talking about him. The whole idea was to subvert the cuteness of the character and bring out an ugly side, which Saturday Night Live achieved. The best part of the skit comes at the very end when Mooney shouts, “I’m 50!” which is because of Baby Yoda’s real age and a callback to former SNL cast member Molly Shannon’s Sally O’Malley character.

Baby Yoda was just introduced to the world and the first chapter of his story is nearly over. The Mandalorian only has two episodes left, with one coming early this week in honor of The Rise of Skywalker release. Episode 7 will premiere at midnight on Wednesday, December 18th, though Star Wars fans know that means around midnight and not right on the dot. Disney+ has yet to figure out how to get the popular series to launch right at midnight as of this writing.

The final episode of The Mandalorian will air on December 27th. This means we only have two more episodes to learn about Baby Yoda before he returns in season 2. We’re still unsure of the character’s origins, or what the Yoda species is even called. Showrunner Jon Favreau has said we will learn more about him by the time season 1 wraps, which means the next two episodes could give Star Wars fans some pretty huge information. As to what that is, it’s a mystery for the time being as Favreau and crew have done an amazing job keeping everything under wraps.

The Mandalorian has proven to be something that nearly all Star Wars fans can get behind, which is incredibly rare. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have been able to tap into most of the things that made Star Wars great in the first place, taking inspiration from the same things George Lucas did when creating the franchise. It has paid off and many fans are probably bummed to know that the first chapter is nearly finished. Hopefully the rest of the Star Wars shows on the streaming platform can deliver the goods like this series has.
