Disney’s Frozen 2 continues to rule the box office. The animated musical was able to earn $34.6 million over the weekend, which was more than enough to stay at number one. The movie has yet to leave the number one spot since debuting there three weeks ago. Frozen 2 broke Thanksgiving weekend numbers and is well on its way to crossing the $1 billion mark. As of this writing, the sequel has brought in over $919 million globally.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, STXFilms’ Playmobil: The Movie movie bombed with only $811,000 domestically. Globally, it faired a little better, with a little over $12 million, though that is a far cry from the $75 million it cost to make. The animated family movie based on European children’s toys now has the record for the third-worst domestic opening for a movie debuting in over 2,000 theaters. Not even discounted $5 tickets were able to help Playmobil.
Knives Out was able to take the second spot this weekend after bringing in $14.1 million. The Rian Johnson-directed whodunnit has been praised by critics and has positive word of mouth reviews too. Ford v Ferrari took the third position at the box office with $6.53 million, which brings its worldwide total to $167.6 million. Queen & Slim stayed in the number four spot this weekend after earning $6.5 million.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood earned $5.2 million this weekend, which places it a number five. Tom Hanks stars as the iconic Mister Rogers in the movie and there will more than likely be some awards talk when all is said and done. Dark Waters came in at number six with $4.1 million. The history thriller focuses on a corporate defense attorney as he takes on an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company that exposes a lengthy history of pollution.
21 Bridges took the seventh spot this weekend after bringing in $2.8 million. The action thriller reunites Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman with the Russo Brothers. Comedy Playing with Fire came in at number eight with $2 million. The John Cena-starring movie has earned $49 million globally thus far. World War II action thriller Midway took the ninth spot with $1.9 million. Finally, Joker remains in the top ten this weekend at number ten. The comic book movie earned a little over $1 million and has already crossed the $1 billion mark globally. Playmobil took the fourteenth position in its debut weekend.
