Sorry, Star Wars fans – it looks like a gay romance between Poe and Finn just isn’t on the cards.

In an interview with Variety, Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac confirmed that he’s aware of the “natural chemistry” between the two characters, but says a romantic relationship won’t happen because “people are too afraid”.

“Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe that would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control,” he said.

“It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what.”

In defence of the writers’ decision, Isaac noted that the “ambiguity” of the Finn and Poe’s relationship might allow more people to see themselves in the characters. “But if they would’ve been boyfriends, that would have been fun,” he added.

John Boyega, who plays Finn, said: “They’ve always had a quite loving and open relationship in which it wouldn’t be too weird if it went beyond it. But at the same time, they are just platonic at the moment.”

The upcoming film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concludes the Skywalker saga, so unfortunately it looks like this is the last we’ll see of the characters – and our last hope of FinnPoe.

But director J.J. Abrams teased the possibility of more LGBT+ representation in future, noting that he’s always strived for a Star Wars cast that “looked more the way the world looks than not.”

“And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” Abrams said.

Variety pressed him on whether that means there will be a queer character in The Rise of Skywalker, but Abrams kept his cards close to his chest.

“I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie,” he replied with a smile. “But I did just say what I just said.”
