Frozen 2 dominated this weekend’s box office with a $127 million debut. Overseas, the animated family movie generated $223 million for a massive worldwide start of $350 million, which is the biggest day-and-date global animated debut in history. The first Frozen movie hit theaters before Thanksgiving 2013 and was able to bring in $93 million. Disney knew they had a hit on their hands, but the sequel has exceeded expectations globally and should be a good first punch for the end of the year box office battle. The studio is closing out the year with The Rise of Skywalker.
Ford v Ferrari took the second spot this weekend after taking in $16.5 million. The second weekend for the movie sees its domestic tally at $57 million. Disney has surpassed $3.5 billion domestically this year, which includes Fox movies, this weekend. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood debuted at number three after bringing in $13.5 million. Tom Hanks stars as the iconic Fred Rogers in the biopic. There is some pretty loud Academy Awards buzz surrounding the movie.
21 Bridges opened up this weekend to the fourth position after earning $9.3 million. The action thriller stars Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman and was produced by the Russo Brothers. Reviews have been mixed on the movie, though Boseman’s performance has been widely praised. Midway took the fifth spot this weekend after bringing in $4.7 million. The World War II epic has been a hit at the box office since debuting three weeks ago and has made $43 million domestically.
Playing With Fire was able to secure the sixth spot at this weekend’s box office. The comedy stars John Cena and earned $4.6 million over the weekend. The movie has been a steady earner since it hit theaters. The Good Liar took the seventh spot this weekend after bringing in $3.3 million. The crime thriller stars Hellen Mirren and Ian McKellen.
Charlie’s Angels took the eighth spot at the box office this weekend after generating $3.1 million. The reboot has not been earning up to expectations and will more than likely be a pretty big loss for the studio. Last Christmas earned $3 million this weekend, which landed the movie in ninth place. Finally, the tenth spot this weekend goes to Todd Phillips’ Joker with $2.8 million.
