When a studio puts out an R rated film there are many factors that probably run through the executives in charge minds. Will there be backlash for the reasons that the film is in fact rated R? Will it make its money back by alienating a demographic full of people under the age of 18?
Lately, there have been quite a few R rated movies that haven’t been a concern in the commercial appeal department. Deadpool, both 1 and 2, The Passion of the Christ, IT Chapter One and others.
There is a new King of the Rated R’s. That crown goes to the Todd Phillips’ JOKER.
The film starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, and supporting roles for Frances Conroy and Robert DeNiro has just become the highest-grossing R rated film of all time coming in with $788.1 million. Surpassing all the pretenders to the crown. It also became the biggest October debut ever by tallying up to $93.5 million.
Mind you this number will continue to increase because Joker hasn’t even been in theaters a month yet. So you can expect the many more positive returns for the Clown Prince of Crime in the very near future.
