Ed Asner Wants Rob Zombie To Remake The Sound of Music

Ed Asner wants Rob Zombie to remake The Sound of Music. Former president of the Screen Actor’s Guild, the actor is probably best known for playing Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spinoff, Lou Grant. However, Asner has an extensive resume in both film and television.

Rob Zombie made a name for himself in the 90s with his band, White Zombie, and continued releasing albums as a solo artist after they disbanded. In recent years, the musician has become better known as a filmmaker who made movies such as House of 1000 CorpsesThe Devil’s Rejects, and the recently released third installment, 3 From Hell. Zombie also remade the 70s slasher classic, Halloween and helmed a sequel as well. He has admitted that making both Halloween movies was a terrible experience. Though his work is polarizing, one can’t deny he has a distinct style of filmmaking that he brings to all of his projects. There is no mistaking a Rob Zombie movie for a film by anyone else.

Ed Asner responded to a question posted on Twitter which asked, “A movie you’d like to see Rob Zombie remake, no matter how insane.” The answers ranged from The Warriors to Home Alone, but Asner took it to the next level by saying, “I had to look up who @RobZombie was. But now that I know I will say The Sound of Music.” You have to admire not only the fact that Asner gave such a creative answer with such little experience on the subject, but also that he was willing to do some research to join the conversation. The Sound of Music is, of course, is the 1965 musical classic starring Julie Andrews as Maria, the postulant who brings love and music into the lives of the entire von Trap family.

Zombie’s most recent movie, 3 From Hell, follows The Devil’s Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses before it. It is the third film to focus on the Firefly family, who are probably Zombie’s best-known creation. Although the movie’s reviews are not great thus far, 3 From Hell definitely subverted expectations, leaving some fans hoping to see another chapter in this saga.

It’s no surprise that Asner might not be familiar with Zombie’s work, considering the two are on opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum. That being said, it’s pretty impressive that with so little background on the auteur, Asner was able to come up with such a perfect choice for a Zombie remake. Many of the answers to the question posed were funny, but a Rob Zombie version of The Sound of Music is truly inspired.
