Megan Marx, the openly bisexual former contestant on The Bachelor Australia, has criticised reality TV for “teaching” people to use same-sex romance for publicity.

Marx found love on The Bachelor Australia in 2016 by giving up on the guy at the heart of the show and running off with another female contestant, Tiffany Scanlon.

The couple have since broken up, but Marx returned to Bachelor in Paradise last year.

Marx wrote in an Instagram post on Monday, August 28: “I’m unsure if I was part of sexuality evolution in the Disney-concept of RTV, or the opposite, where people were ‘taught’ to use same-sex PDA as a way to get publicity, or attention.”

When I’m asked whether I have any regrets about my time on reality TV – the answer is no, although there is a little personal discomfort when I think about how I dealt with my same-sex relationship in a seemingly pre-fluid-bachelor world. Although I felt proud to come out and I don’t want to take away from that, I was blowing media whistles, when I should have just relaxed into who I was, and let the chips fall where they may. This weekend I started reading a book about the history of ‘sexual deviancy’ in Britain & America & how it was dealt with by the government & media. It’s strange to think that the idea of sexual identity wasn’t even a concept – and that it has taken time, with a tide of both progression and regression – to get to where we are today – a place of acceptance & reform (still a way to go, but I feel very lucky nonetheless). My discomfort comes when I realise that I’m unsure if I was part of sexuality evolution in the Disney-concept of RTV, or the opposite, where people were ‘taught’ to use same-sex PDA as a way to get publicity, or attention. I can’t emit myself from this ‘phenomena’ (hey, I was on the cover of MAXIM with my girlfriend at the time- how’s that for publicity!), but I can say that I did that as a proud bisexual woman. As someone who has been courted many times by women that aren’t even into women, have lied about it, or are just there for a story, it really really sucks to see some, make a joke out of what has taken generations for the government and media to take seriously. Please, everyone, be who your are. Be honest about who you are. It is the most freeing thing ever. Let the chips fall where they may.

The reality star explained she had also used her same-sex relationship to “blow media whistles”.

She continued: “When I’m asked whether I have any regrets about my time on reality TV – the answer is no, although there is a little personal discomfort when I think about how I dealt with my same-sex relationship in a seemingly pre-fluid-bachelor world.

She added: “Hey, I was on the cover of Maxim with my girlfriend at the time – how’s that for publicity! But I can say that I did that as a proud bisexual woman.”

Marx and Scanlon posed nude on the cover of Maxim in December 2016, after winning the magazine’s couple of the year award.

She also voiced her frustration with meeting women who seem to be interested in her, but in fact are “just there for a story”.

She said: “As someone who has been courted many times by women that aren’t even into women, have lied about it, or are just there for a story, it really really sucks to see some make a joke out of what has taken generations for the government and media to take seriously.
